Domain Registration Guide
Everything you need to know about registering a Maltese domain — who qualifies, what documents you need, and how long it takes.
A .mt domain is Malta’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), managed by NIC-MT (Network Information Centre Malta). Unlike .com or .eu domains which anyone can register, .mt domains have specific eligibility requirements — you must have a genuine connection to Malta.
The most common .mt domain types are:
For most businesses, .com.mt is the right choice. If you are unsure, we can advise you during the hosting setup process.
Prices and processing times are subject to change. Always verify directly with NIC-MT.
NIC-MT requires applicants to have a genuine connection to Malta. Here are the main eligibility categories:
Any company registered with the Malta Business Registry (MBR) can register a .com.mt domain. You will need your company registration number (C-number).
📄 Required: MBR registration certificate
Individuals residing in Malta can register a .mt domain using their Maltese ID card or residence permit. The domain must relate to a legitimate activity in Malta.
📄 Required: Maltese ID card or residence permit
Foreign companies with a genuine commercial interest in Malta may qualify. You will need to demonstrate a connection — such as a Maltese business partner, office, or registered agent.
📄 Required: Case by case — contact NIC-MT
The process is straightforward once you have your documents ready.
Visit the NIC-MT WHOIS tool at nic.org.mt to check if your desired domain name is available. You can search for any .mt domain.
Register for a free account at nic.org.mt. You will need a valid email address and your contact details. This is your registrant account.
Fill in the domain registration form. You will need to provide your company C-number (for business registrations) or your ID card number (for individuals). Upload supporting documents if requested.
NIC-MT charges approximately €20–25 per year. Payment is made directly to NIC-MT — not through your hosting provider. Keep the receipt for your records.
NIC-MT reviews applications manually. Standard processing takes 1–5 business days. You will receive a confirmation email when your domain is approved and active.
Once approved, log in to your NIC-MT account and update the nameservers to point to your hosting. If you are hosting with MaltaCode, set them to:
ns1.maltacode.eu
ns2.maltacode.eu
DNS propagation typically takes 1–24 hours.
