The Story Behind MaltaCode

Real experience. Real support. A real person based in Gozo, Malta.

How It All Started

From a Casio PB-100 to Gozo, Malta

In 1978, my father brought home an Ohio Scientific Challenger III — a large, expensive and thoroughly impressive machine. My brother caught the programming bug immediately, and was kind enough to pass it on to me. For my 14th birthday, he gave me a Casio PB-100 with BASIC. That was it. I was hooked.

By 1984, at 19 years old, I found myself in a job interview in Dubai at American President Lines — a large international shipping company that had just acquired their first IBM PC running MS-DOS 1.0 and Lotus 1-2-3. They asked if I had computer experience. Then they showed me into a room and told me to come back in 45 minutes with something to show them. I figured it out. I got the job. I started the following Monday.

From there, a career in IT spanning over 40 years. Networks, hardware, software development — for Heineken, Philips, Nokia, Dutch national TV, Corus Steel, and dozens of smaller companies. I started my own company, and when the web arrived in the early 90s, I was building HTML sites from raw code.

Malta — The Next Chapter

In 2012, a project brought me to Malta. Something about the islands felt familiar — perhaps the warmth of the Middle East I grew up in, the sea, the light. In 2014, I moved my company from the Netherlands to Malta and renamed it MaltaCode. In 2016, I settled in Gozo.

For a Dutchman, ‘good enough’ is never quite good enough. Twelve years on, I think the Maltese have forgiven me for it.

MaltaCode has been serving Maltese, Dutch and international clients ever since — growing steadily through referrals and reputation. No advertising, just doing the work properly and being there when clients need it.

Beyond the Screen

The Things That Keep Me Thinking

I have a lifelong love of sailing. I own a Calypso 26 — a classic cabin sailboat built by Manoel Shipyard in Malta in 1967. I am restoring it completely, from the hull up. Without compromising the original character of the boat. It has smart automation built in. Of course it does.

My grandfather was a carpenter. Somewhere along the way, those genes passed to me. I restore things — houses, cars, motorbikes, furniture. The principle is always the same: understand what it was, understand what it can be, and bring it back properly.

I love automating things. Homes, offices, boats. Lights, audio, cameras, climate control, irrigation. Everything controllable by voice or phone, locally and remotely. It is what happens when a programmer has too much spare time and a soldering iron.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

My Promise

What You Can Expect From Me

After four decades of long days and complex projects, I have made a deliberate choice: fewer clients, better work, more time for the things that matter. MaltaCode in 2026 is not trying to be the biggest web company in Malta. It is trying to be the best-supported one.

I respond to every message within 24 hours — usually the same day.

You will know the full cost before we start. No surprises, no scope creep without discussion.

I do not take large deposits for work not yet done. Milestones agreed, work delivered, then invoiced.

If something goes wrong, I fix it. And I tell you about it.
